chesterfield は 19世紀に Chesterfield 伯爵にちなむ家具名として広まり、固有名が普通名詞化した語です。爵位名 Chesterfield 自体は古英語 ceaster「ローマの砦」（ラテン語 castrum 由来）＋ field「野原」で、「砦のそばの野」が元。関連語は Chester、castle。
