「cityscape」は city＋-scape「眺め・景観」。city はラテン語 civitas「市民社会・都市」にさかのぼり、-scape は landscape と同系で「見える姿」を表す。civic や citizen と並べると、都市らしさが目に見えたものがこの語だと分かる。
Cityscape is made from city and -scape. City goes back to Latin civitas, meaning "citizenship," "community," or "city," while -scape is the same element seen in landscape and means a viewed scene. So the word was formed to mean the visible scene of a city. Civic and citizen come from the same Latin root as city.
