unsurpassed は un-「〜ない」+ surpass「追い越す」の過去分詞形です。surpass は古フランス語 surpasser に由来し、sur-「上へ」+ pass「通る」が核なので、「誰にも越されない」から『比類のない』となり、pass や surpassing も同根です。
Unsurpassed combines un- with surpassed. Surpass came from Old French surpasser, built from sur- "above" and pass, meaning "to go beyond" or "go past." The word therefore developed from the image of not being gone beyond by anyone else; pass and surpassing belong to the same family.
