upshot の語源・成り立ち Etymology
upshot は up「上へ」と shot「射ること」から成り、16世紀には弓競技で勝負を決める「最後の一矢」を指しました。そこから「締めくくりの一撃」→「最終結果・結論」へ広がり、shoot や offshoot と同じく、何かが行き着く先の感覚が残っています。
Upshot combines up and shot. In the 1500s, it could mean the final shot in an archery contest, the shot that decided the result. From that image, it later came to mean the final outcome or conclusion of anything. It is related to shoot and offshoot.
