noun

千里眼せんりがん

解説 Definition

超自然的な力で未来や遠くの出来事を見通す能力。透視や千里眼。

Clairvoyance is the supposed ability to know or see things that cannot be known through normal senses. It is often discussed in connection with fortune-telling, spiritual ideas, or the supernatural. The word is usually used in a mysterious or doubtful context.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

覚えるコツは、clear, clarify, crystal clear の「はっきり」と、vision, visible, preview の「見る」を頭の中で重ねること。スペルの clair- は clear に近く、-voy- は view/vision 系を連想すると、「遠くや未来まで、くっきり見通す力」と一本で覚えやすい。単なる prediction や guess ではなく、超自然的に“見えてしまう”感じが核。名詞なので have clairvoyance, claim clairvoyance のように使うと定着する。

Break it into two memory parts: `clair-` sounds like clear, and `-voy-` can remind you of view or vision. That gives the image of seeing clearly beyond normal limits. It feels more supernatural than guess or prediction, so think of someone who claims clairvoyance.

例文

clairvoyance の語源・成り立ち Etymology

clairvoyance はフランス語 clairvoyance に由来し、clair「明るい」+ voyant「見ている」から成ります。voir はラテン語 videre にさかのぼり、visionrevise も同根です。つまり「はっきり見る」が、未来や本質を見抜く千里眼へ広がった語です。

Clairvoyance came into English from French clairvoyance, from clair "clear" and voyant "seeing." The seeing part is related to French voir, from Latin videre, "to see," which also gave English words like vision and revise. The original idea was simply "clear seeing," and it later widened to mean seeing what is hidden, distant, or still to come.
