A colloquialism is an informal word or expression that people use in everyday conversation. It is common in spoken English and casual writing, but it may sound too relaxed for formal situations.

colloquialism は colloquial + -ism で、『口語らしい言い方・口語表現』を表す語です。colloquial はラテン語 colloquium「対話」由来で、col-「共に」+ loqui「話す」から成り、関連語に soliloquy, loquacious。『人が一緒に話す場の言葉』だから口語表現なのです。
