Memory Tip
drunken carousing, carouse all night, carousing in taverns
`Carousing` suggests noisy, cheerful group fun, often with drinking, singing, and late-night celebration. Picture people in a pub or after a victory, laughing and shouting together. It is livelier than simply `making noise`, but not as violent as a `riot`.

Etymology
Carousing comes from carouse. Carouse is usually traced to German gar aus, meaning roughly "all out" or "completely finished," especially of drinking a cup dry. From that idea of emptying a drink completely, the meaning widened to noisy drinking and lively partying.
