columnist は column＋-ist。column はラテン語 columna「柱」にさかのぼり、新聞の縦長の欄を柱のように見立てたことから「コラム」の意味になりました。-ist は「〜する人」で、columnar や colonnade が同系です。
“Columnist” was formed from “column” and the agent suffix -ist, meaning a person who practices or specializes in something. “Column” ultimately comes from Latin columna, meaning “pillar.” The word was applied to a vertical division of printed text because its tall, narrow shape resembled a pillar, and later to a regular feature occupying such a space. A columnist is therefore the person who writes that feature.
