complacently はラテン語 complacere「大いに喜ばせる」から来て、com-「十分に」+ placere「喜ばせる」+ -ly という形。もともと「気に入って満たされる」感覚なので、please や placid と結ぶと「満足して、安穏と」の含みが見えてくる。
Complacently comes from complacent + -ly. Complacent goes back to Latin complacere, meaning "to please greatly," from com- "fully" and placere "to please." The idea moved from being well pleased to being too easily satisfied or self-satisfied. Related English words include please and placid.
