confluence はラテン語 con-「共に」+ fluere「流れる」に由来し、文字どおり「一緒に流れること」。川の合流が原義なので、人や思想の合流にも使えるのが腑に落ち、同じ語根をもつ関連語には fluent, affluent がある。
