conkers の語源・成り立ち Etymology
イギリスの子供の遊びに由来。元は巻貝(conch)の殻をぶつけ合う遊びで、後にセイヨウトチノキの実で代用された。conquer（征服する）との関連も指摘される。関連語: conch（巻貝）、conquer（打ち負かす）。遊び名が実の呼称になった。
Conkers comes from a British children's game. The name may go back to an earlier game using conch shells, later replaced by horse-chestnut seeds, and some people also connect it with conquer because the game is about beating the other player's piece. In time, the game name became the name of the seeds themselves.
