法律制度。判断能力が不十分な者の財産や身上を保護・管理する制度。保佐人や後見人が本人に代わり重要な決定を行う。
Conservatorship is a legal arrangement in which a person or organization is given authority to manage another person’s affairs. It is usually used when someone cannot fully manage their own finances, health decisions, or daily life. The term is mainly used in legal and medical contexts.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
conservator（保護・管理する人）が土台で、-ship が付くと「役割・関係」ではなく「その地位や制度」になる形で覚えると整理しやすい。friendship, membership と同じ発想で、人そのものではなく“しくみ”を指す語。conserve / preserve の「守る・保つ」感覚を残しつつ、日常的に世話するだけでなく、法律の場面で本人に代わって財産管理や重要判断を担う制度だと結びつけると忘れにくい。guardian は人、conservatorship は制度、という対比も有効。

conservatorship は conservator「保護する人・後見人」+ -ship「地位・制度」。conservator はラテン語 conservare「保つ、守る」← com-「ともに/強意」+ servare「見守る」に由来し、conserve や preserve と同根なので、「守る人の立場や制度」と理解できます。
Conservatorship combines conservator with -ship, a suffix for status or legal condition. Conservator comes from Latin conservare "to keep, preserve," built from com- and servare "to watch over, keep safe." So the word grew from the idea of preserving or protecting into the legal role or system of care; conserve and preserve share the same root.
