converging
収束する
解説 Definition
converging は converge(収束する、集まる)の現在分詞・動名詞です。線、道、意見、数値などが一つの点や方向に近づいていく様子を表します。
Converging means moving, developing, or tending toward the same point, direction, result, or value. It can describe physical routes as well as opinions, methods, or numerical data that are becoming increasingly similar.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 converge「一点に集まる」の語末の e を取って -ing を付けた形です。con-「共に」と、反対方向へ分かれる diverge を対で覚えると効果的です。roads are converging、converging toward a value のように、道・意見・数値が同じ点へ近づく場面を思い浮かべましょう。
Start with the base verb converge and form converging by dropping the final silent e before adding -ing. Remember the central picture of several separate paths moving toward one shared point. Roads can be converging near a station, teams can be converging on the same solution, and measurements can be converging toward a stable value. Pair the word with diverging, which describes movement apart in different directions. This contrast makes the meaning and the con- idea of “together” easier to retain.

converging の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語の接頭辞「con-(共に)」と動詞「vergere(傾く、曲がる)」に由来します。異なる方角から「共に傾き集まる」様子から、線や意見が一点に「収束する」意味が定着しました。同語根には「diverge(分岐する)」があります。
Converging is the -ing form of converge. Converge comes from Late Latin convergere, built from con-, “together,” and vergere, “to bend, incline, or turn.” Its structure therefore suggests separate things inclining toward one another. English extended the physical idea of lines meeting to abstract cases such as opinions, methods, or values approaching a common result.
