本来の直接的な言い方を避けて、より柔らかい表現で同じ意味を伝える言い方のことです。不快感や冒涜を避けるために、マイルドな言葉に置き換える修辞技法です。
A euphemism is a mild or indirect word or phrase used instead of one that sounds harsh, direct, or unpleasant. People often use euphemisms when talking about sensitive topics such as death, illness, or social problems. The purpose is usually to sound more polite, softer, or less uncomfortable.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
euphemism は、まず eu- を「よい・快い」系の接頭辞としてまとめて覚えると残りやすいです。euphoria の eu- と同じで、きつい表現を“感じよく”包む語だと考えると定着します。die を pass away と言うように、直接で blunt な言い方を避けて softer wording に替える場面を思い浮かべるのがコツ。反対は dysphemism。相手への配慮で角を丸くする言い換えが euphemism です。
