osprey はアングロ=フランス語 ospriet を経て、中世ラテン語 avis praedae『獲物の鳥』に由来します。avis『鳥』と praeda『獲物』に分けられ、avian や prey が同根。つまり名は最初から『獲物を捕る鳥』で、魚を急襲するミサゴの姿そのものです。
