correlated
相関のある
解説 Definition
相関のあるとは、二つ以上の変数や事象の間に統計的または論理的な関連性が存在することを表す形容詞です。一方が変化すると、他方も連動して変化する傾向がある場合に使われます。
If two or more variables or phenomena are correlated, they show a systematic relationship in which changes in one tend to accompany changes in another. The term describes association and does not by itself establish that either one causes the other.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
correlated は correlate「相関させる・相関する」の過去分詞からできた形容詞。語末 e を残して -d を付け、発音は /ˈkɔːrəleɪtɪd/ のように -ed が /ɪd/ になる。be correlated with、highly・strongly correlated を一まとまりで覚え、因果関係を示す causal とは区別する。
Start with the base verb correlate, meaning “show or establish a relationship,” and recognize correlated as its past-participial adjective. Because correlate already ends in silent e, only d is added in spelling. The ending is pronounced /ɪd/, giving a final sound like “lay-tid.” Learn the standard frame be correlated with and the frequent combinations highly correlated, strongly correlated, positively correlated, and negatively correlated. Picture two measurements moving in a related pattern. Keep one crucial contrast in mind: correlated means statistically associated, whereas causal means that one factor actually produces a change in another.

correlated の語源・成り立ち Etymology
correlated は correlate の過去分詞形で、語の核は cor-「共に」+ relation 系の「結びつける」です。relation はラテン語 relatio/relatus「運び返す・関連づける」にさかのぼるので、つまり「一緒に関係づけられた」から「相関のある」となり、relation や relative も関連語です。
Correlated is the past participle of correlate. Correlate was formed from Latin elements conveying reciprocal or joint relation: cor-, a form of com- meaning “together,” and words related to relatio, “a bringing back” or “relation,” from referre, “to carry back.” The adjective therefore presents things as related together. Its modern statistical use refers to variables whose values vary in an associated pattern, without necessarily implying a cause-and-effect connection.
