counteracts の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 contra(反対に)と actus(行為、agere=行うの過去分詞)の組み合わせ。counter-(対抗)+ act(作用する)で「反作用を及ぼす」が原義。同根語に counterpart(対応物)や interact(相互作用する)がある。
Counteract was formed from counter-, meaning “against” or “in opposition,” and act. Counter- ultimately comes through French from Latin contra, while act is related to Latin agere, “to do or drive,” and its participial noun actus. The compound therefore conveys acting against another action or influence. Counteracts is the regular third-person singular present form, created by adding -s to the base verb counteract.
