フランス語 couper（切る）から派生した coupon（切り取り片）が語源。もとは債券から利息部分を切り離す紙片を指した。同根語に coup（一撃、切る動作）がある。「切り取って使う券」が本来の意味。
Coupon was borrowed from French coupon, meaning a piece cut off, from couper, “to cut.” The word originally referred to a detachable certificate attached to a bond that could be presented to receive an interest payment. Because such pieces were designed to be cut off and redeemed, the term later spread to detachable tickets offering discounts or benefits. Modern digital coupon codes preserve the function even though no physical cutting is involved.
