cross-（横切って）＋link（輪・つなぎ）＋-ing で、cross は古英語 cros、さらにラテン語 crux に、link は古ノルド語 hlekkr 系にさかのぼる。『鎖を横につなぐ』像がそのまま、分子鎖を橋渡しする「架橋」の意味になった。関連語は crux、linkage。
Crosslinking is made from cross, link, and -ing. Cross goes back to Latin crux, while link comes from Old Norse, where it meant a ring or connecting loop in a chain. The combined idea is of links joining sideways across other links, which later became the technical sense of forming connecting bridges, especially between molecular chains.
