Crossword is a transparent compound of cross and word, named for the way words intersect in its grid. The puzzle form appeared in the early twentieth century and was initially also called a word-cross. The reversed compound crossword soon became established, followed by the fuller expression crossword puzzle. Its modern spelling directly reflects the defining arrangement of the answers.
