追加料金

surcharge は sur-「上に・超えて」＋ charge「負わせる」から成る語で、古フランス語を経て後期ラテン語 carricare「荷を積む」にさかのぼります。charge や cargo も同系で、「上乗せして負担させる」感覚から「追加料金」を表します。
Surcharge comes from Old French, built from sur- meaning "over" and charge meaning "load" or "burden." Charge goes back to Late Latin carricare, "to load a wagon," which is also related to cargo. The sense changed from putting an extra load on something to adding an extra cost or payment.
