解説 Definition
主に乳幼児にみられる上気道の炎症性疾患で、犬がほえるようなせき、声のかすれ、ゼーゼーという吸気音を伴うことが多い。多くはウイルス感染が原因で、夜間に悪化しやすいが、安静や加湿、必要に応じた治療で改善する。
Croup is an illness, usually affecting young children, that causes swelling in the throat and airways. It often produces a harsh, barking cough and can make breathing difficult. This is a medical term.

croup は病名としてはスコットランド方言 croup／croop「しわがれ声を出す」に由来し、せきや喘鳴の音を写した擬声的な語と考えられます。croak も近い響きの関連語で、名前自体が病気の苦しそうな声を表しているわけです。
