curmudgeonは16世紀英語に現れた語で、語源は確定していないが、スコットランド系要素cur-/ker-とゲール語muigean「不機嫌な人」を結ぶ説がある。はっきりした分解はできないものの、最初から「むっとした嫌な人」の響きを帯び、curmudgeonlyも同じ語幹から出た。
Curmudgeon appeared in English in the 16th century, but its exact origin is still uncertain. Some scholars connect it with Scottish or Gaelic elements linked to an ill-tempered person, though no explanation is fully proved. Because of that, the word seems to have carried a rough, bad-tempered feeling from the start. Curmudgeonly was later formed from the same base.
