damn の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語damnāre（有罪を宣告する、罰する）に由来し、古フランス語damnerを経て英語に入った。語根damnum（損害）から派生し、元はキリスト教で「神の裁きによる永遠の罰」を意味した。関連語：damage（損害）、condemn（非難する）。
The phrase joins two old words with different histories. "Line" comes from Latin "linea," meaning "thread" or "line," while "busy" comes from Old English "bisig," meaning "occupied" or "active," related to "business." In telephone use, a phone connection was imagined as a line, so "the line is busy" came to mean that the line is already being used by someone else.
