`code`（コード化する・暗号）を知っていれば、`de-` が「外す・逆にする」の働きだと見て `decode` は「コードを外して読める形に戻す」と覚えると定着しやすいです。`encode` が「符号化する」、`decode` がその逆のセット。`decode a message / signal / QR code` のように、読めない情報を意味のある形に戻す場面でよく使います。単なる `read` ではなく、ひと手間かけて“解読する”感覚がある点を意識すると混同しにくいです。

decode は「逆に・取り除く」を表す de- と code から成り、code はラテン語 codex「木板の書物、規則集」に由来します。つまり「符号にされたものを元へ戻して読む」で、encode や codify と同じ語根だと思うと意味がつかみやすいです。
Decode is made from the prefix de-, meaning "reverse" or "remove," and code. Code comes from Latin codex, first meaning a wooden tablet or book, and later a set of laws or rules; related words include codify and encode. Decode therefore meant to turn coded writing back into a readable form, and then more generally to make something hidden understandable.
