wobbly は近代英語 wobble「ぐらぐら揺れる」に形容詞語尾 -y が付いた語です。wobble は中低地ドイツ語系 wabbeln と結びつく擬音的な語とされ、音自体が不安定な揺れを感じさせます。同根語に wobble や wabble があります。
Wobbly comes from wobble with the adjective ending -y. Wobble is a later English word, probably related to Low German forms such as wabbeln and shaped by sound, so it feels almost imitative. The sense stayed very close to the original sound-image of shaky, uneven movement; related forms include wobble and wabble.
