decipher の語源・成り立ち Etymology
de-「外す・逆に」+ cipher「暗号」からできた語。cipher は古フランス語・中世ラテン語を経てアラビア語 sifr「空・ゼロ」にさかのぼり、decipher は文字通り「暗号をほどく」で、関連語は cipher、zero。
Decipher is built from de-, meaning "undo" or "reverse," and cipher. Cipher came through Old French and Medieval Latin from Arabic sifr, meaning "empty" or "zero," which also gave English zero. The original idea of decipher was literally to undo a coded message, which later became the general sense of working out something hard to understand.
