解説 Definition

テニスなどで、双方が並び、そこから通常2ポイント連続で取るとゲームに勝つ同点の状態を指します。テニスの40対40などがこれに当たります。

In tennis and some similar sports, deuce is the tied score at which a player or team must win two consecutive points to take the game. The word can also mean a playing card or die showing two, but that is not the sense used here.

使い方 Usage

  • reach deuce は「デュースになる」、at deuce は「デュースの状態で」。これらの表現では冠詞を付けません。 Reach deuce means to arrive at that score, and at deuce describes being at it. These expressions use no article before deuce.
  • bring the score back to deuce で「スコアをデュースに戻す」と表せます。 Use bring the score back to deuce to describe returning the score to deuce.

使い分け Common distinctions

  • tie は一般的な同点、deuce は競技特有の同点の状態です。カードやサイコロの「2」を表す別義もあります。 Tie is a general word for an equal score; deuce is a specific tied stage in a sport. A separate sense refers to a card or die showing two.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

覚える核は「2」。テニスで40対40に並び、そこから通常2ポイント連続で取ると勝つ場面を思い浮かべましょう。

Use two as the memory anchor. Picture a tennis game tied at 40–40, where a player normally needs two consecutive points to win.

deuce の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語の「2」を意味する duo が古フランス語 deus を経て英語に入りました。元はサイコロやカードの「2の目」を指し、テニスでは勝利にあと2点連続で取る必要がある互角状態へ転じました。同じ語根を持つ語に duo(二人組)や dual(二つの)があります。

Deuce came into English through Old French deus or related forms meaning “two,” ultimately from Latin duo. It first referred to a throw of two in dice and later to the two in cards. In tennis, the term developed for a tied score from which two further points, producing a two-point lead, are required to win. Duo and dual descend from the same broader Indo-European numerical source and preserve the central idea of two.
