dialer は dial「ダイヤル」+ -er「するもの・人」から成ります。dial はラテン語 dies「日」に由来する中世ラテン語 diale を経て入り、もとは日時計の盤面を指したので、番号盤を回す装置にもその名が移りました。関連語は dial, diary です。
Dialer is formed from dial and the agent ending -er. Dial came through Medieval Latin diale and is linked to Latin dies "day," because it first referred to the face of a sundial. Later the name moved from the time-marking surface to the numbered turning plate of a telephone.
