覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
dissect「切り分けて調べる」に -ed を付けた形です。dis-「分けて」+ sect「切る」のイメージで、解剖と細かな分析を結び付けましょう。原形の語末が /t/ なので、-ed は /ɪd/ と発音します。
Connect dis- with separation and sect with cutting: picture cutting something into parts to examine it. This links dissection with detailed analysis. Add -ed to dissect without changing its spelling; because the base ends in /t/, pronounce -ed as /ɪd/.

The biology students dissected a small fish in class.

dissected の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語のdis-(分けて)+secare(切る)に由来し、「切り離す」が語源です。接頭辞dis-は「離れて」、語根sectは「切る」で、sectionやintersectと同系語です。器官を切り開いて調べる様子から、生物を「解剖した」という意味が直感的に理解できます。
Dissected is formed by adding -ed to dissect. Dissect comes from Latin dissecare, built from dis-, “apart,” and secare, “to cut.” Its literal foundation is therefore cutting apart. English first used the verb for opening and separating bodily structures for examination, then extended it metaphorically to the close analysis of arguments, events, texts, and other complex subjects. Section and intersect contain the same cutting root.
