noun

距離きょり

解説 Definition

distances は distance(距離)の複数形です。二つ以上の場所や物の間の長さを表すときに使います。

The lengths of space separating two or more pairs of places, people, or objects. The plural is used when several separate measurements or kinds of separation are being considered.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原形 distance「距離」に複数語尾 -s が付いた形です。語末が /s/ 音なので、複数語尾は /ɪz/ と発音し、全体は3音節になります。the distances between towns、measure distances、long distances の形で、複数の区間や異なる隔たりを比べる場面を思い浮かべ、単数形と使い分けます。

Distances is the plural of distance. Because the singular ends in the /s/ sound, the plural ending is pronounced /ɪz/, giving the word three syllables. Use the plural when several gaps or measurements are involved, as in the distances between towns, measure the distances on a map, or travel long distances. Picture several pairs of points connected by lines of different lengths. That image distinguishes distances from one distance and reinforces the underlying idea of things standing apart from one another.

例文

The distances between the towns are short.

その町々の間の距離は短いです。

We measured the distances on the map.

私たちは地図上で距離を測りました。

Long distances can make travel tiring.

長い距離の移動は疲れることがあります。

distances の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 distantia(隔たり)から古フランス語 distance を経て英語に入った。dis-(離れて)+ stare(立つ)で「離れて立つこと」が原義。関連語: distant(遠い)、stance(姿勢)。立っている場所同士の隔たりが「距離」になった。

Distances is formed from distance plus the plural suffix -s. Distance entered English through Old French from Latin distantia, “a standing apart,” related to distare. That Latin verb combines dis-, “apart,” with stare, “to stand.” The original image of objects standing separately developed into the modern idea of the measurable space between places, people, or things.
