oversight の語源・成り立ち Etymology
oversight は over「上から」と sight「見る」から成り、原義は「上から見渡すこと」です。oversee や sight が同根で、全体に目を配る感覚から「監督」が生まれました。なお「見落とし」の意味もあるのは、見渡す行為が裏返るからです。
Oversight combines over and sight, and its early sense was "a view from above" or "watchful supervision." From that came the meaning of "supervision" or "careful watching," related to oversee. Later, the word also developed the opposite-looking sense of "an omission" or "something missed," probably from the idea of failing to notice despite watching.
