象の牙などから得られる硬く白い物質を指し、彫刻や装飾品、かつてのピアノ鍵盤などに用いられてきた。そこから転じて、その素材を思わせる黄みを帯びた白色、アイボリー色の意味でも使われる。
Ivory is a hard, smooth, white material that comes from the tusks of animals such as elephants. It has been used to make art objects, jewelry, and piano keys, though its trade is now often restricted. Ivory can also mean a pale white or cream color.

ivory は古フランス語 ivoire を経て、中世ラテン語 eborium、さらにラテン語 ebur「象牙」にさかのぼる。もとは象の牙の材質名で、そこから「象牙色」の意味にも広がった。関連語は ivoried, eburine。
Ivory came into English through Old French ivoire, from Medieval Latin eborium, and earlier Latin ebur, meaning "elephant tusk" or "ivory." At first it named the material itself.
