dol は dollar の省略形で、英語 dollar はドイツ語 Taler 系、さらに Joachimsthaler（ヨアヒムの谷の銀貨名）にさかのぼります。土地名が貨幣名になった語で、dollar や thaler が同根です。
Dol is formed by shortening dollar. Dollar entered English through Dutch or Low German forms related to German Taler. Taler itself was shortened from Joachimsthaler, the name of a silver coin minted from metal obtained near Joachimsthal, “Joachim’s valley.” Thus, a geographical name became a coin name and later contributed to the English currency term that dol abbreviates.
