drachma はギリシャ語 drakhme に由来し、さらに drassesthai「つかむ、一握りにする」にさかのぼります。もとは「ひとつかみ分」の重さや貨幣で、手で握れる量がそのまま単位になった語です。drachm や dram が近い仲間です。
