drumhead は drum と head の複合語で、文字通り「太鼓の頭」。drum は中世オランダ語 tromme にさかのぼる擬音的な語、head は古英語 heafod 由来で、張った膜のいちばん上の打面をそのまま名づけた語だとわかる。関連語は drummer、behead。
