dutchman の語源・成り立ち Etymology
dutchman は Dutch+man。Dutch は中世には「民衆の言葉の」を意味するゲルマン系語にさかのぼり、のちに特に「オランダの」を指すようになった。Deutsch と同根で、「その土地の民の人」からオランダ人の意味になった。
Dutchman combines Dutch with man. Dutch is related to German Deutsch and ultimately comes from a Germanic word meaning “of the people” or “vernacular,” originally distinguishing a local Germanic language from Latin. In English, Dutch gradually became restricted mainly to the people and language of the Netherlands. Adding man produced the specific term for a male member of that nationality. The word is conventionally written with a capital D.
