hardly は、数量や程度がきわめて小さく、何とかその状態に達する感触を表す副詞です。否定に近い弱さを含みますが、完全にできないのではなく「ぎりぎり」「やっと」という含みがあります。体力・時間・声の大きさなどに余裕がない場面でよく使われます。
