覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
duty(義務)→ dutiful(義務をきちんと果たす)→ dutifully(律儀に、きちんと)と段階でつなぐと覚えやすいです。-ful は「〜に満ちた」、-ly は副詞化なので、形の変化ごとに意味がほぼ素直に広がります。voluntarily のような「自発的に」という軽さより、頼まれたこと・果たすべきことをまじめにこなす響きが強め。do one’s homework dutifully のように、地道に責任を果たす場面と結びつけると定着します。
Remember the word family: `duty` -> `dutiful` -> `dutifully`. The meaning grows in a very regular way, so the form itself helps memory. It has a serious feeling of doing what you should do, not just doing something willingly.

dutifully の語源・成り立ち Etymology
dutifullyはdutiful + -lyで、dutifulはduty「義務」からできた語です。dutyは古フランス語deu「負うべきもの」を経てラテン語debere「借りがある・義務がある」に由来し、「果たすべきこと」に従って行うので「律儀に」となり、dueやdebtが同根です。
Dutifully comes from dutiful plus the adverb ending -ly. Dutiful is based on duty, which came through Old French from Latin debere, meaning "to owe." Because duty meant something owed or required, dutifully developed the sense of acting in the way one is expected to. Due and debt come from the same root.
