echelon はフランス語 echelon「はしごの横木・段」に由来し、さらにラテン語 scala「はしご」にさかのぼります。scale や escalator も同根で、もとは一段一段の足場だったと知ると、「階層・序列」が上へ並ぶ段として理解できます。
