To elapse means for time to pass. It is usually used in formal or written English when talking about a period of time between two events.

まず lapse を知っていると覚えやすい語です。time elapsed で「時間が経過した」とよく出るので、elapse は「時間が主語になる動詞」と押さえるのがコツ。人が主語で「時間を過ごす」spend、単に「過ぎる」pass とは使い分けます。An hour elapsed. のように、気づけば時間が進んでいたという少し客観的な響きがあります。経過時間・締切・待ち時間の文脈でまとめて覚えると定着しやすいです。
Remember the common pattern `time elapsed`. Unlike `spend`, the subject is usually time itself: `An hour elapsed.` It has a more formal, objective feeling than simply saying time `passed`.

ラテン語 elabi（e-「外へ」+ labi「滑る」）の過去分詞 elapsus に由来。時間が「するりと滑り去る」イメージ。関連語: lapse（過失・経過）, collapse（崩壊＝共に滑り落ちる）。時間が人の手をすり抜けるように過ぎ去る感覚が原義に込められている。
Elapse comes from Latin elabi, from e- "out" and labi "to slip," through the participle elapsus. The original image is of something slipping away. In English that picture was applied especially to time, and the same root appears in lapse and collapse.
