emporia の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語「emporion」(交易所)の複数形で、「emporos」(商人・旅人)から派生。「en-」(中へ)+「poros」(通路・旅)が語根で、旅をして商いをする人の場所が原義。同根語に emporium(大商店)がある。米国カンザス州の都市名としても知られる。
The name Emporia ultimately comes from Greek emporia, the plural of emporion, “trading place” or “market.” Emporion was related to emporos, a merchant or traveler engaged in trade, traditionally analyzed through elements associated with traveling along a route. The same Greek source entered English in emporium, meaning a marketplace or large store. Emporia was adopted as a place name, including for the city founded in Kansas in the nineteenth century.
