古フランス語 endosser（背に載せる）から、ラテン語 in-（上に）+ dorsum（背中）が語源。小切手の「裏書き」が原義で、背中＝裏面にサインすることから「承認・支持する」の意に発展した。関連語は dorsal（背部の）。
