entity は中世ラテン語 entitas に由来し、さらにラテン語 ens, ent-「存在するもの」へさかのぼる。ent- は esse「ある」に基づき、-ity が付いて「存在であること」。essence や absent と同じ“あること”の発想から、「実体」の意味になる。
Entity comes from Medieval Latin entitas, formed from ens or ent-, meaning "being" or "that which exists." It ultimately goes back to Latin esse, "to be." The word first referred to existence itself, and later to a thing seen as a separate being or unit.
