An epos is a long poem or story about great events and heroic actions. It is a literary word, similar to "epic," and is usually used when talking about classical or traditional literature.

Epos is borrowed directly from Greek epos, meaning "word," "song," or "story." It goes back to an Indo-European root meaning "to speak," which is also related to Latin vox, "voice." Because heroic stories were first passed on in spoken or sung form, the word came to refer especially to early epic poetry; epic is a close related word.
