ギリシャ語 epos（言葉、歌、物語）から直接借用された語。印欧祖語 *wekʷ-（話す）に遡り、ラテン語 vox（声）と同根。口承で語り継がれた英雄叙事詩の総称として使われ、特にホメロス以前の口誦詩を指す。関連語: epic（eposの形容詞形）, epoch。
Epos is borrowed directly from Greek epos, meaning "word," "song," or "story." It goes back to an Indo-European root meaning "to speak," which is also related to Latin vox, "voice." Because heroic stories were first passed on in spoken or sung form, the word came to refer especially to early epic poetry; epic is a close related word.
