eye（目）+ brow（額・まゆのあたり）で、そのまま「目の上の部分」を指す語。まず brow だけで「まゆ・ひたい周辺」の感覚を持つと覚えやすいです。表情と強く結びつく語で、raise an eyebrow は「眉を上げる」→驚き・不信・疑い、furrow one’s brow は「眉をひそめる」→心配・考え込み。eyelash（まつげ）と混同しやすいので、「lash はまぶたの縁の毛、brow は目の上の線」と位置で分けると定着します。

eyebrow は古英語 eage「目」+ bru「まゆ・額の縁」からできた語で、文字どおり「目の上の縁」です。brow や browbeat の brow も同根で、ただの毛ではなく顔を縁取って表情を作る部分だと思うと意味が深まります。
Eyebrow comes from Old English words meaning "eye" and "brow" or "edge of the forehead." It originally meant the ridge or border above the eye, not only the hair itself. Over time, the word became the regular name for that part of the face. Related words include brow and browbeat.
