fakirはアラビア語faqir「貧しい人」にさかのぼり、イスラーム世界で「神の前で貧しい者」という修行者像を表して英語に入った。語根f-q-rは「欠乏」が核で、faqrや綴り違いのfaqirにも同じ「世俗を離れた貧しさ」の感覚が残る。
Fakir came into English from Arabic faqir, meaning "poor person." In Islamic use, it referred to a holy person who was "poor before God," so the idea of poverty became linked with religious self-denial. The same Arabic root also appears in faqr and the variant spelling faqir.
