In a rare technical garment sense, fronting is material or a constructed section used to form or cover the front of a garment. It does not specifically mean the buttoned opening of a shirt, which is normally called a placket.

Connect fronting with front. In its rare garment sense, it denotes material or a section used to form or cover the front of a garment. Do not treat it as the usual name for a buttoned opening: that is normally a placket. A facing is material used to finish an edge or opening, often on the inside.

fronting の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語のfrons(額)に由来するfrontに、名詞化接尾辞-ingが結合しています。本来「前面を向く・覆う」動作から、物を前に立てて支える「前立て」へ意味が発展しました。同根語にfrontierやconfrontがあります。
Fronting is formed from front and the noun-forming suffix -ing. Front entered English through Old French front from Latin frons, meaning “forehead” or “brow,” and developed the broader sense of the foremost or visible side of something. The verb front can mean to face, cover, or provide with a front. From this idea, fronting came to denote material used on, or a constructed section forming, the front of an object or garment.
