gait の語源・成り立ち Etymology
gaitは古ノルド語gata「道・通り道」に由来し、英語ではもと「行くこと・道のり」を意味した。のちに「歩くしかた」へ意味が絞られ、歩行の型を指すようになった。gaitedやドイツ語Gasseも同根で、足の通る道筋の感覚が残る。
Gait comes from Old Norse gata, meaning "road" or "path." In early English it could mean a way of going or a journey, but later its meaning narrowed to the manner of walking. The word still keeps the old image of the path made by the feet in motion. A related form is gaited.
