材料工学や電気化学で、異種金属が電解質中で接触し、電位差によって電流・腐食・発電が起こる性質を表す専門的な形容詞です。船体、配管、電池、金属部品の組み合わせを論じるときに出ます。

galvanic は、イタリアの解剖学者ガルヴァーニ（Galvani）の姓に、ギリシャ語由来でラテン語経由の形容詞語尾 -ic が付いた語。カエルの脚の実験から「電気で刺激する」という意味が育ち、galvanize や galvanism も同じ人名に由来する。
Galvanic comes from the surname of Luigi Galvani, the Italian scientist. His experiments with electricity, especially on frog legs, made his name closely linked with electric stimulation. From there, galvanic came to mean relating to electric action, and later also something sudden and energizing. Related words include galvanize and galvanism.
